“While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.”
Luke 2 v 6 & 7 (NIV)
Someone recently posted an interesting statement on Facebook. It said “So it comes down to a choice: there’s Jesus and there’s me, and there’s only room to take one of them seriously.”
How much room do we allow Jesus to have in our Christmas festivities? As Christians we, of course, know that Jesus is the ‘reason for the season’ and we will celebrate his birth as we worship in church services over the next week. But do we only give him as much room as is convenient for us ?
In the midst of our fun with family and friends do we allow the celebration of the Saviour’s birth to take centre stage ? Or do we get caught up in all the activity and give Jesus only a passing glance ?
Jesus or me ? Who do I make more room for ? Whose desires guide my decisions ? Whose priorities determine my actions ?
Of course we make room for Jesus in the midst of our festivities, but do we make room in the same way as that first Christmas ? Find him a corner on the outside where he doesn’t cause too much inconvenience ? Or do we instead set ourselves aside, our plans and agendas, and make room for him right at the centre of our lives ?
This Christmas let us take time to dwell on the wonder and awe of the birth of our Lord and King.
We take this opportunity to wish you a joyful and peaceful Christmas.
