HAITI TRAGEDY

Sisters & Brothers

In an effort to keep you abreast of the developments in Haiti after the Earthquake of January 12, 2010, we ask you kindly to note the following:

1. We are elated to inform you that the church the JBU is constructing in the community of Kafab withstood the Earthquake, but sadly the homes, except one in proximity to the church building, collapsed. The residents however are thanking God not only for sparing their lives, but also for the church building in which over ten (10) families are presently housed.

2. All members and their families of our four (4) partner churches (i.e. Port-Au-Prince, Kafab, Kamoinsa and Thomasset) are accounted for. However some of their relatives, neighbours and friends did not make it.

3. Our student at UTCWI, Jean Rony Bataille’s mother is still missing and it has been assumed that she has not survived. She was at a prayer meeting in a house when the earthquake struck. The entire house collapsed on all who were at the prayer meeting and the rescuers are yet to reach that site. The other Haitian student at UTC, Frantz Camille, is more joyful as his sister was one of the survivors who was rescued after the building of the bank she worked collapsed. We are praying for the families of those workers who did not make it.

4. Those members of the partnership who are still in the city reported that, on Sunday, January 17, 2010, a church service was held in the church yard because the church buildings had collapsed. They are appealing to the JBU to come soon with relief supplies, as the present chaos with the distribution of supplies continue to exclude many who are dying of starvation.

5. The JBUMA salutes the Boulevard Baptist Church in taking the initiative in hosting a service of solidarity for all Haitians and others in the city of Kingston, on Sunday, January 17, 2010, at 4:00p.m. Approximately 50 Haitians who are studying, working and living in the Kingston Metropolitan Area along with Jamaicans, including Dr. Hyacinth Peart, who was the main Speaker, had a most inspiring time of Prayer and Reflections.

6. The JBU is hoping to pay a one-day pastoral visit, as soon as the congestion at the airport in Port-Au-Prince eases.

7. We continue to appeal to all Jamaicans to take to their churches the following items: canned food, bottled water, non-perishable food items and money (this could also be lodged at NCB, Half Way Tree - account #304533943).

Thank you for your prayers, your telephone calls, your expressions of solidarity and please be on alert to do more, as subsequent advisories might request of you.

God Bless You.

Sincerely,

Karl B. Johnson
